OPTIONS
Why does a twelve-year-old master a video game in an afternoon, while adults fear their own computers for decades? Because game designers solved the problem desktop designers never did.
The lesson desktops never learned
Games teach complete novices to master complex systems — no manual, no training course, no fear of breaking anything. They do it with dynamic, diegetic, context-aware design: the right tool surfaces at the right moment, inside the world itself, and everything irrelevant simply is not there.
Desktops did the opposite. They put every capability on screen at once, buried the rest in menus and settings, wrote manuals nobody reads, and called the resulting fear "user error."
OPTIONS is the game designers' philosophy applied to an operating system. Help scales to your skill: scaffolding for the novice, silence for the expert, safety for both. If a feature needs a manual, we consider it unfinished.
How it works
Golem is one organism with four organs:
The Brain options-engine
A context engine. Collectors sense the world — your windows, media, git repos, phone, battery. A Mind decides what is logical to offer right now, and — just as important — what to take away.
The Body waverunner
The one living surface: dock, openbox, pills, boxes, notifications. GPU-rendered, animated with intent, idle at rest — motion means something or doesn't happen.
The Ground NixOS
The whole machine is intent written to a file. Atomic updates, reproducible installs, a timeline of generations you can always step back through. The system cannot rot.
The Reach Golem for Android
The phone becomes a collector and a surface of the same Brain. Not an accessory app — an organ of the same organism.
When is a module done?
Every OPTIONS module — clipboard, battery, dictionary, network, phone — must pass the same six gates before we call it finished:
What this replaces
Clippy interrupted you. Copilot upsells you. macOS hides things and hopes. Linux hands you the parts and wishes you luck. Focus modes make you schedule your own attention.
OPTIONS is none of these, because it starts from sensing, not from marketing: the Brain knows you're in a call, in a game, on battery, holding a link — and behaves accordingly. Help that is offered, never imposed. Silence that is earned, never configured.
The right tool, the moment you need it. Gone when you don't.
